Content-aware image resizing creates magic
Normally, when you resize images you have to do it while maintaining the images’s aspect ratio which means that the ratio between horizontal and vertical dimensions of the images should be maintained while resizing so that the image does not appear distorted.
As an example, the image on the left is the original image while the one on the right is the resized image where the image is horizontally resized while keeping the vertical dimensions intact.
Obviously, the image on the right looks distorted.
Enter the wonderful technology of content-aware resizing. This method presented by Dr.Ariel Shamir in the following video describes how only one dimension of the image could be resized without distorting it. It becomes possible to even enlarge only the width of an image which adds more pixels to the image width while not distorting it. The technology also finds use in deleting certain parts of an image such one person in a group of people while keeping everything else constant. Check the video out.
Absolutely phenomenal and certainly the technology of the future. This technology could make a lot of features in professional photo editing softwares redundant and unnecessary. Professional image morphing could become child’s play.
